OTTAWA CATHOLIC SCHOOL BOARD
St. Mark High School Students Craft Memoirs to Honour Seniors' Life Journeys

May 14, 2024

When a new seniors home opened in Barrhaven, an OCSB alumni on staff was struck by the seniors' incredible stories and wanted a way to help them get to know each other.  She then reached out to St. Mark High School educator Heather Nimmo, who seized the opportunity to have her Grade 12 English students meet with the residents for a memoir writing exercise. Residents at the home were paired with students according to interest, school, and career.

The students undertook the heartwarming initiative by writing memoirs dedicated to seniors, capturing the essence of their life stories. Through this thoughtful project, the vibrant narratives of seniors' experiences, wisdom, and cherished memories are now immortalized on paper, creating a bridge between generations. These memoirs serve as a testament to the richness of each senior's journey and foster empathy, understanding, and connection within the school community. As the students delved into the lives of these seniors, they not only gained valuable insights but also cultivated a deeper appreciation for the diverse tapestry of human experiences.

This initiative also helped the residents get to know one another, nurturing a stronger sense of community and connection among all participants.
