The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic District School Board (ALCDSB) congratulates Maya Garrett, grade 12 student at St. Paul Catholic Secondary School (SPCSS) in Trenton, for being one of 10 recipients of the University of Guelph-Humber's Founders' Academic Merit Scholarship.

The scholarship recognizes, high academic achievement, superior leadership ability and potential, in graduating students.

"Maya stands out as one of the most dedicated and accomplished students that I have encountered throughout my career as a teacher," said Tara Dall-McGrath, Department Head for Religion and the Arts and classroom teacher at SPCSS. "I have had the privilege of witnessing Maya excel, not only academically, but also as a leader to her peers, she has exhibited leadership skills that have positively impacted the classroom environment and school community," she said.

Recipients of the scholarship are eligible to receive $9,000 each academic year for a total of $36,000 over 4 years of full-time study.

"Maya's determination and consistent high grades, coupled with a passion for learning are a perfect blend of attributes for future student success. I am confident that Maya will continue to make significant contributions and achieve great success in her future endeavors," said Dall-McGrath.

Maya credits the support she received from her guidance department and teachers for their assistance with the application process. "I must thank my teachers for their guidance throughout my high school career and by writing me excellent letters of reference. I am also very grateful to our guidance department, as the counsellors helped me to navigate the post-secondary admissions application process," she said.

Maya is pursuing a degree in Media Studies and Communications at the University of Guelph-Humber this September, with the hopes of working in either the film or advertising industries. "I am looking forward to studying courses which are focused on my own interests, living in residence and in an urban centre. I am excited about meeting new people and becoming part of a new school community," she said.

Maya has attended SPCSS since the seventh grade and though she is thrilled to be moving on to post-secondary, she expresses a fondness for her time there.
