MOSAIC OF US
LKDSB Student's Artwork Chosen to Represent 2025 Youth Diversity Symposium

June 20, 2025

Sibgha Tahir, an LKDSB Grade 7 student from Indian Creek Road Public School, has been named the winner of the logo contest for the 2025 Youth Diversity Symposium: Mosaic of Us. Her thoughtful and creative design, selected for its powerful message and artistic merit, is featured on commemorative hoodies and t-shirts for the event.

The Mosaic of Us symposium was a collaborative initiative between the Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History and the Lambton Kent District School Board, in partnership with the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum. The event was made possible thanks to near-total funding from the Ontario Heritage Trust, through the Josiah Henson Museum.

"Thanks to Canada Life's generous support, we were able to host an amazing 2025 Youth Diversity Symposium" explains Steven Cook, Site Manager of the Josiah Henson Museum. "The theme The Mosaic of Us' gave our students the chance to connect, create, and celebrate their differences. Events like this help young people see the value in respecting each other and building stronger, inclusive friendships and communities."

Held as a day of learning, celebration, and community, the symposium brought together students and staff to explore themes of identity, belonging, and representation. Participants engaged in a dynamic lineup of activities including keynote speeches, meditation, storytelling, mosaic art workshops, and performances featuring motivational music and dance.

"Art has always been a huge part of my life," said Sibgha. "Especially now, it's been a great way for me to express my emotions or tune out the rest of the world."

A passionate artist since age four, Sibgha is also a committed leader in her school and community. She is an active member of Indian Creek Road Public School's Wellness Team, Make a Difference Crew, and Food Team, and volunteers at events like Family Fun Night and the Meet the Teacher BBQ. Outside of school, she participates in community initiatives such as Merry Magic Christmas and events supporting She Leads and International Women's Day.

Sibgha called the symposium both memorable and meaningful. "I absolutely loved the Diversity Symposium," she said. "My favourite part, besides winning, was being able to write my family's story. Diversity isn't just the colour of our skin it's our story, and if we don't share it, who will?"

As she prepares for her transition from Grade 7, Sibgha reflects fondly on her experience. "I have loved my time at Indian Creek Road Public School. The school always makes people feel welcome, and the community is amazing."

To commemorate the event and support the ongoing work of LKDSB's Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Justice Department, the LKDSB has made the Mosaic of Us hoodie and short-sleeved t-shirt, featuring Sibgha's winning design, available for purchase online: Mosaic of Us - Team Outfitters

The LKDSB extends its heartfelt congratulations to Sibgha and sincere thanks to all students, staff, and community partners especially the Josiah Henson Museum of African-Canadian History, the Buxton National Historic Site & Museum, and the Ontario Heritage Trust for their essential roles in making the Mosaic of Us symposium a powerful celebration of the diversity that strengthens our schools and communities.
