OTTAWA CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Grade 8 Student Honoured in Canadian Senate for Outstanding School Project

July 8, 2025

An OCDSB student recently received national recognition in the Canadian Senate, demonstrating the powerful impact of student-led initiatives. Scarlett N., a Grade 8 student from Agincourt Road Public School, was recognized for her outstanding work on a school assignment.

Scarlett's English teacher, Wenna Doig, assigned her class the task of researching a notable Canadian figure. Going above and beyond, Scarlett took the initiative to arrange and conduct an interview with the Senator of Agriculture, Robert Black. She developed a video featuring an overview of Senator Black's career along with clips from their interview.

Her remarkable work drew well-deserved attention. Scarlett was invited as a guest to a Senate debate on June 11th. During the meeting, Senator Black highlighted her impressive contributions and potential, stating, "Honourable colleagues, it is the youth of today who will be the leaders of tomorrow. And my friend Ms. Scarlett will indeed be a leader of tomorrow, right here in Ontario."

Senator Black praised the dedication of young people like Scarlett, who volunteer their time, organize school functions, participate in extracurricular activities and assist their peers. He encouraged all young Canadians to seize opportunities, take chances and learn by doing.

"All I did was put in the extra effort and time. I guess hard work really does pay off." - Scarlett N.

Scarlett's story is a powerful example of student curiosity in action. This acknowledgment highlights how innovative assignments and student leadership can inspire others across the District and beyond. Well done, Scarlett!
