Carter Clifton, a third year StFX student, won the highly regarded Science Atlantic Communication Award in Mathematics, awarded to the student who is best able to communicate a science topic to their peers, and six StFX students attended the recent Science Atlantic Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science (MSCS) Conference held at Cape Breton University on Oct. 17-18.

All six students who included Guo Ke, Ewan MacDuff, Carter Clifton, Jennie MacLean, Christopher Richard, and Nate Clow competed in the mathematics problem solving competition and three students, Ewan MacDuff, Christopher Richard and Carter Clifton gave research presentations.

"Each student attended all plenary presentations, which were given by very prestigious scholars on topics ranging from forensic data science and algebraic geometry to computer science applications to psychology. They also attended all student sessions and were able to learn mathematics at an accessible level. This also gives them insight into what work can be done beyond their own degrees if they choose to do graduate work in Atlantic Canada," says faculty advisor Dr. Darien DeWolf.
"Of course, there are also the intangible benefits of encouraging our students to engage beyond our own circle and connect with peers from other Atlantic institutions. Our departure was delayed as students exchanged contact information, and it was clear that each student left with a sense of fulfillment and renewed appreciation of the discipline and community," Dr DeWolf said.
