Through a generous $1.5 million endowment established by The Joyce Family Foundation, Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) students will face fewer financial barriers in pursuing an innovative post-secondary education. This transformational gift will expand access and opportunities for learners across Alberta, especially those from the central region of the province.
The annual income generated from the endowment will fund The Joyce Family Foundation Bursary, providing approximately 11 awards, valued at up to $5,000 each, to students entering the first year of any RDP program. These bursaries are renewable for the duration of a student's programs, provided they maintain good academic standing, demonstrate continued financial need and engage in ongoing mentorship throughout their studies.
"We are extremely grateful to receive this endowment gift to create The Joyce Family Foundation Bursary," says Patrick Machacek, Vice President, Development and Partnerships, Red Deer Polytechnic. "These funds will help eliminate financial barriers and ensure that more students can continue to access post-secondary education, participating in job-ready education, training and applied research opportunities while attending RDP, and contributing to Alberta's skilled workforce after graduating."
Building on the Polytechnic's commitment to student success, criteria of the bursary is such that funds will be awarded to Canadian citizens who are full-time students beginning their first post-secondary program and who have demonstrated perseverance in overcoming personal challenges. Preference will be given to students from the central Alberta region.
"This bursary program reflects Ron Joyce's lifelong commitment to giving young people a chance to pursue their dreams," says Rob MacIsaac, Chair of the Joyce Family Foundation. "We're proud to continue that legacy by helping students advance their education at Red Deer Polytechnic, knowing that their dedication and promise are being recognized and supported."
The Joyce Family Foundation is a private family foundation established by Ronald V. Joyce, who played a pivotal role in growing Tim Hortons into a national success. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting the social, economic and emotional well-being of children and youth, helping them grow into healthy, confident and independent contributors to communities across Canada.
Red Deer Polytechnic provides more than $2 million in student awards and scholarships annually, supporting learners in achieving their academic and career aspirations.
RDP students can apply for this bursary beginning in the 2026-27 academic year.
