For more than four decades, Dr. Lloyd Kornelson has inspired students to see themselves as active participants of the world, as global citizens with the responsibility to help shape it.
The award-winning educator's lifelong commitment to teaching, storytelling, justice, and human rights was recognized this past spring when the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation presented him with its Global Citizenship Award for Educators.

The award comes as Dr. Kornelsen announces his retirement from UWinnipeg, offering a timely recognition of the lasting influence he has had on generations of students. Throughout his career, he has encouraged learners to understand both the power and the responsibility of global citizenship, as well as the central importance of justice and human rights.
Dr. Kornelsen joined UWinnipeg Collegiate in 1986 and was appointed to the Faculty of Education in 2013. Since he began at UWinnipeg, he has taught courses spanning world issues, global citizenship, peace, and development.
His dedication to teaching earned him UWinnipeg's Clifford J. Robson Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence in 2020; and in 2013, he received the Manitoba Education Research Network Award in recognition of research that had a direct and meaningful impact on students.
Beyond the classroom, Dr. Kornelsen played an integral role in the development of UWinnipeg's Global College and the establishment of the interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts in Human Rights , the first undergraduate program of its kind in Western Canada. As part of that work, he built relationships with communities and educators and contributed to the consultation, curriculum development, and implementation of the program.
Dr. Kornelsen was also an active member of the Experiential Learning Network, a grassroots organization dedicated to making experiential learning an integral part of the UWinnipeg experience. The network's efforts contributed to the establishment of an Experiential Learning Fund, which supports faculty-led projects and research grounded in student-centred, active-learning approaches.
His influence also extends to the written word. Dr. Kornelsen has authored and co-edited works exploring education and the transformation toward global citizenship, including Stories of Transformation: Memories of a Global Citizenship Practicum (2014) and Teaching Global Citizenship: A Canadian Perspective (2020).
Although Dr. Kornelsen is officially retired, Dr. Labman notes, "His commitment to storytelling and personal reflection in support of social justice, peacebuilding, and conflict resolution will not end in retirement. We are already looking for opportunities to invite him back into our classrooms."
