Carl Kumaradas has held the role of vice-provost and dean, YSGPS, on an interim basis since February 2024.
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Carl Kumaradas as vice-provost and dean of the Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (YSGPS), effective November 15, 2024. As vice-provost and dean, Carl is responsible for the overall vision and leadership of the university's graduate education and postdoctoral research fellowships. He has held the role on an interim basis since February 5, 2024.
An acclaimed leader at YSGPS, Carl was associate dean, programs for nearly four years. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Physics and previously held the role of interim chair of the department. With more than nine years of experience as graduate program director for the physics program, Carl has led the development of its PhD degree and the implementation of a new program option designed to meet the standards of its accrediting body.
Carl holds a bachelor of applied science in electrical engineering and a master's of science and PhD in medical biophysics, all from the University of Toronto. His research explores computational modelling in biomedical physics with a focus on the use of nanoparticles for cancer detection and treatment. He is actively involved in collaborative research with an industrial partner to work on translating his basic science research into clinical practice.
Throughout his career with Toronto Metropolitan University, Carl has supervised 26 graduate students and two postdoctoral fellows, published 30 peer-reviewed scientific articles, and been involved in externally funded grants totalling approximately $2.3 million. He has also served on 28 university-wide and ten provincial or national committees/groups and as the vice-president, internal, with the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (formerly the RFA).
