January 30, 2025

The Faculty of Applied Health Sciences (FAHS) will have a new leader at its helm this summer.

Panagiota (Nota) Klentrou has been appointed as the next Dean of the Faculty, effective July 1.

An experienced post-secondary administrator, Klentrou has served three terms as the Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies in FAHS from 2011 to 2020.

She is currently in her fourth term as Chair of the Department of Kinesiology, previously holding the position from 2006 to 2011 and 2021 to 2024.

Panagiota (Nota) Klentrou has been appointed as the next Dean of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, effective July 1.

Klentrou has also provided significant collegial leadership and service to the University, serving as an elected member of Senate from 2005 to 2020 and again from 2022 to 2025. During her time as Senator, she has chaired several committees, including those focused on research and scholarship policy; graduate studies; information technology and infrastructure; and planning, priorities and budget advisory. Most recently, she was elected to serve as Chair of Senate.

"Dr. Klentrou brings a wealth of experience to the table that will benefit all within the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences," says Arja Vainio-Mattila, Brock's Provost and Vice-President, Academic. "Her leadership will be an asset to the Faculty as we work together across the University to achieve our strategic goals and reimagine the future through curiosity, creativity and courage.

"I also want to express the University's sincere appreciation to Dr. Peter Tiidus for his outstanding contributions to the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, which he has led since 2015."

Klentrou says she is honoured to soon serve the Faculty as Dean.

"Brock's Faculty of Applied Health Sciences has built a reputation for its dynamic programming, experiential learning opportunities and impactful research making a difference in Canada and around the world," she says. "I'm thrilled to be able to work with so many inspiring students, dedicated staff and world-class educators and researchers in this new capacity."

In addition to her extensive service and administrative experience, Klentrou has a strong research background that focuses on exercise physiology and the health implications of sport training in children and youth. Her scholarship investigates the mechanisms that explain how exercise and diet affect bone development and lifelong bone health.

Her research has been supported by grants from NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR, and several external agencies, such as Genome Canada, the Canadian Space Agency and the Dairy Farmers of Canada.

In recognition of her work, Klentrou was elected President of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) in 2018 and became a CSEP Fellow in 2020. In 2023, CSEP recognized her exceptional contributions to exercise physiology in Canada by awarding her the prestigious CSEP Honour Award.

Klentrou holds an MSc and PhD in Exercise Physiology from the Université de Montréal, as well as a degree in Physical Education and Sports Science (BSc) from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. In addition to her appointment at Brock, she also holds appointments as an adjunct faculty member in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto, as well as the Graduate Program in Kinesiology and Health Science at York University.
