Dr. Bruce Choy appointed next KPU President and Vice-Chancellor

The Board of Governors at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) has appointed Dr. Bruce Choy as the university's next President and Vice-Chancellor, effective Sept. 2.

Dr. Choy, an adjunct professor with the University of Toronto and chair of the George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology's Board of Governors, will replace Dr. Alan Davis, who steps down as KPU President on Aug. 31 after 13 years.

"Dr. Choy brings an incredible depth and breadth of leadership experience to KPU -- from both the private sector and the post-secondary sector -- that will be invaluable in guiding KPU through its next chapter," says Ivy Chen, chair of the KPU Board of Governors.

"I am excited to lead an organization like KPU that focuses on student success," says Dr. Choy. "Education has given so much to me and I am passionate about how it can open transformative pathways for future generations.

"Throughout the search process, I was so impressed with the individuals I met with from across KPU and the calibre and potential of KPU's programs. I am looking forward to building relationships and partnerships with all members of the KPU community."

A specialist in governance and risk management, Dr. Choy is an independent board director with an Institute of Corporate Directors, Director designation. In addition to his experience at George Brown College, he is a director of Shinhan Bank Canada and board governor of The Long Run Institute, a corporate and public policy think tank.  

He was previously a senior executive at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, a Partner at PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), and a managing director at the Global Risk Institute. Dr. Choy's corporate banking and professional services roles were focused on driving sustainable growth in periods of uncertainty and identifying emerging industry opportunities. He was engaged by boards and senior leadership teams on issues of risk management, corporate governance, strategy, innovation and business transformation.

His academic career began at the University of Sydney, Australia, where he was awarded a doctorate for his research on mathematics for risk management. He was also a university and R.A. Priddle medallist from the university's Faculty of Engineering. Early in his career, Dr. Choy was a tenure-track academic in the field of engineering with a focus on environmental protection. He is also a Sloan Fellow from the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He now teaches finance in the Master of Financial Risk Management program for the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.
