CAMPBELL RIVER SCHOOL DISTRICT
Campbell River School District Welcomes New Director of Indigenous Education

August 21, 2025

The Campbell River School District (SD72) welcomed Anne Tenning as the district's new director of Indigenous education on August 1, 2025.

A member of the Stz'uminus First Nation, Tenning brings over 25 years of experience in education, spanning public education, alternative programs, First Nations community schools, and post-secondary institutions.

A recognized provincial leader in Indigenous education, she has served in district leadership roles for over a decade. Most recently, Tenning was the senior manager of curriculum with the First Nations Education Steering Committee (FNESC) and before that was the director of Indigenous education for School District 23 (Central Okanagan). She has relocated from Salmon Arm to Campbell River to take on her new role with the Campbell River School District.

From 2022 to 2025, Tenning served on the BC Teachers' Council as a FNESC-recommended, and Minister-appointed representative. She has also contributed to several Ministry of Education and Child Care committees.

In Campbell River, Tenning will continue the important work led by retiring director of Indigenous education, Debra Martel, to advance the goals of the Indigenous Education Council, alongside the Wei Wai Kum First Nation, We Wai Kai First Nation, χʷɛmaɬkʷu First Nation, Klahoose First Nation, Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council, Ka:'yu:'k't'h/Che:k:tles7et'h' First Nations, Ehattesaht First Nation, Laichwiltach Family Life Society, and North Island Métis Association.

"Anne brings a wealth of knowledge, lived experience, and leadership that will strengthen our district's ongoing commitment to truth, reconciliation, and equity in education," said Geoff Manning, superintendent of schools. "We are honoured to welcome her to the Campbell River School District and look forward to the impact of her leadership on students, staff, and the wider community."

Throughout her career, Tenning has been a sought-after speaker and facilitator, frequently delivering keynote addresses and professional development workshops across the province. She is deeply committed to advancing equity and success for Indigenous learners and fostering inclusive, respectful learning environments for all students.

Tenning holds a Master of Arts from the University of Victoria and a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia, and is currently completing her PhD at UBC Okanagan, focusing on Indigenous Knowledges.
