HOLLAND COLLEGE
Adam Smith Named Director of Athletics and Recreation at Holland College

August 27, 2025

Adam Smith is no stranger to the athletics scene on Prince Edward Island. As a former director of the Pownal Minor Hockey Association and current President of the Stratford Minor Baseball Association, Smith has spent countless hours in the rink or on the field, championing youth sports and helping shape athletic programming across Prince Edward Island.

Now he's stepping into a new role as the Director of Athletics and Recreation at Holland College, a move that brings his personal passions and professional expertise into perfect alignment.

For the past eight years, Smith has led Holland College's Customized Training Department, where he oversaw the creation and expansion of numerous professional development and micro credential programs. Under his leadership, the department experienced significant growth, responding to industry needs and offering Islanders the opportunity to upskill and advance their careers.

As Athletics Director, he hopes to channel that same energy and vision to the growth of the Hurricanes Varsity program.

"The Hurricanes Athletic program provides an incredible opportunity for students to continue playing high-level sports while training for their future careers," says Smith. "I am honoured to be carrying on the legacy of this athletic institution and to enhance the opportunities for our student-athletes."

Smith succeeds long-time Athletics Director, Albert Roche, who retired earlier this year. Roche was instrumental in establishing the Hurricanes' athletic programming, leading Holland College to become the first Atlantic Canadian community college to join the ACAA league in 2005.

Twenty years later, the Hurricanes have become a force in collegiate sport, earning their place in multiple regional and national championships across 12 men's and women's varsity teams. The Athletics Department also runs youth day camps and recreational programming, further strengthening its impact on the community.

"Sport is a transformative discipline," says Smith, "and I am excited about the challenge ahead and look forward to continuing to provide top-tier athletic programming to our students and to Islanders across the province."

Whether coaching youth teams, leading college initiatives or cheering on his three children from the sidelines, Smith brings enthusiasm and pride to everything he does. As director of Athletics, he's ready to make a lasting impact on the field, in the gym and across the greater college Community.
