Westwind School Division is pleased to announce the appointment of Darryl Salmon as the new principal of Westwind Alternate School, beginning in the 2026/2027 school year.
Mr. Salmon will assume the role following the retirement of Mike DeVuyst, who has served Westwind Alternate School with dedication and care over many years. Mr. DeVuyst will retire at the end of the 2025/2026 school year.
Currently, Mr. Salmon serves as principal of Raymond High School, a role he will continue in for the remainder of the 2025/2026 school year. He will officially transition into his new position at Westwind Alternate School at the start of the 2026/2027 school year, ensuring continuity and a smooth leadership transition for students, families, and staff.
Superintendent Darren Mazutinec says Mr. Salmon brings both experience and a strong student-centred focus to the role.
"Darryl is a thoughtful and dedicated leader who consistently puts students first," said Mazutinec. "He has a strong understanding of the diverse needs of learners and a genuine commitment to building positive relationships with students, staff, and families. We are confident he will be an excellent fit for Westwind Alternate School."
Mr. Salmon was selected through a comprehensive and competitive selection process, based on the competencies outlined in Alberta Education's Leadership Quality Standard. His experience supporting student success, fostering inclusive school cultures, and collaborating with staff and community partners was a key strength highlighted throughout the process.
Westwind Alternate School plays a vital role in supporting students through flexible programming and individualized pathways, and Mr. Salmon looks forward to continuing and strengthening this work.
