NOVA SCOTIA
New Sydney NSCC Campus to Offer Child Care

May 6, 2024

With financial support from the Province, the new Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Sydney waterfront campus will include a child-care centre, making it a learning environment for all ages when it opens in September.

An agreement between the YMCA of Cape Breton and NSCC will provide 50 child-care spaces for the community, with priority given to students and employees at the new campus.

"We are so proud of this partnership with NSCC that is supporting more families in Sydney through greater access to child care," said Brian Comer, Minister of Addictions and Mental Health and MLA for Cape Breton East, on behalf of Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Becky Druhan. "For students and faculty who are parents, this investment lets them focus on work or school knowing that affordable, high-quality child care is right where they need it."

The centre will be operated by the YMCA. Parents can join the virtual wait list at: https://capebreton.ymca.ca/child-care-youth/child-youth-programs/

Quotes:

"Our YMCA is pleased to be able to serve even more families through this expansion. The new centre at the Sydney waterfront campus will grow our child-care division to now have three sites in operation in Cape Breton and Guysborough. We are thrilled to partner with NSCC to provide more affordable, accessible and inclusive child care for families in CBRM."

Sabrina Vatcher, CEO, YMCA of Cape Breton

"NSCC is excited to partner with the YMCA, with the support of the Province. This is a tremendous addition for our community. We heard from our students and staff at our current campus just how much of an asset it would be to have a child-care centre on-site. It not only supports our community members who have preschool-aged children, it also offers our campus early childhood education students a learning connection and potential work placement for their studies."

Quick Facts:

  • the Province provided $350,000 toward the cost of landscaping the outdoor play space and interior fixtures, fittings and equipment
