Community Partnership Results in Transformative Awards for GLSS Students

February 20, 2025
In a significant show of community support, five graduating students at Great Lakes Secondary School (GLSS) will benefit annually from the Anne McFadyen Scholarships, made possible through partnership with local organizations and businesses. The scholarships, each valued at $12,000, offer a transformative opportunity for students to further their education.

The Anne McFadyen Scholarship is named in honour of Anne McFayden, a trailblazing lawyer, judge, and community leader. Anne was the first woman president of the Lambton Law Association and served for many years as a judge on the Ontario Court of Justice. Outside her legal career, Anne was a passionate runner, world traveler, and active supporter of local charities.

The scholarships, established through the generosity of Anne's husband, George, the Sarnia Community Foundation, and Great Lakes Secondary School, are awarded annually to five Great Lakes Secondary School students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership, community service, and financial need.

"We are incredibly grateful for these scholarships and the opportunities they will provide to our students," said Derek Stenton, Principal of Great Lakes Secondary School. "The Anne McFayden Scholarships are more than financial support they recognize hard work, dedication, and the potential for success. This partnership is a testament to the value of community involvement and its lasting impact on our students."

The Anne McFadyen Scholarships will support students pursuing post-secondary education by alleviating financial barriers and empowering them to achieve their goals.

"This is another example of how LKDSB is working 'For the Future,'" adds Ben Hazzard, LKDSB's Superintendent of Education. "These scholarships provide essential resources and encouragement for our students as they take the next steps in their lives, whether that involves post-secondary education, apprenticeships, or entering the workforce."

The scholarships also serve as a reminder of the power of community partnerships in shaping students' futures. Through continued collaboration with local organizations, the Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB) ensures its students are well-equipped for success beyond graduation.
