This spring, the Peace River Forage Association (PRFA) will use a 25.6-acre field on the Northern Lights College (NLC) farm to test crops which aren't generally grown in this area, like sorghum, millet, triticale, and feed corn. This crop demonstration site "will address the critical need for accessible, regionally relevant information that supports agricultural producers in making informed decisions about crop choices," according to its project objectives.
Later, the PRFA plans on having local Indigenous partners sow some traditional medicines, while others look at plants for naturalizing disturbed or cleared ground, and possible cover crops for soil improvement. The Peace River valley needs real data to inform crop choices going forward, and this will be a great learning tool for local forage producers and aid future agricultural plans in the area and NLC is proud to be a part of it.
