Where Real-Life Learning Begins
What if your school day included running a small business, managing orders, baking fresh treats, and learning customer service all before lunch? At St. Pius X High School, that's exactly what students in the Inclusion classroom are doing through SPXpresso, a student-led coffee and baking initiative that blends education with empowerment.

Born from a simple idea and rooted in our Catholic values, SPXpresso shows what's possible when we open doors, build bridges, and nourish new beginnings.
How It Started: A Spark in the Classroom
SPXpresso launched in 2021 thanks to teacher Monica, who saw an opportunity for her students to build practical skills and meaningful connections. With her encouragement, the class began offering coffee and treats to staff laying the groundwork for a program that would soon flourish.
When teacher Jennifer Currie and Educational Assistant Rita Barnes stepped in, SPXpresso gained momentum (and a reputation for top-notch baking). With support from the Social Entrepreneur Program (SEP), the team secured funding and expanded the vision.
Skills That Go Beyond the Classroom
Today, students in the Inclusion class are running a real business. They brew coffee, design menus, take orders, and handle food prep. But more importantly, they're learning transferable skills time management, communication, food safety, and teamwork that will serve them well in future jobs and everyday life.
This initiative is a powerful example of how we Be Innovative at OCSB by meeting students where they are and giving them the tools to thrive.
From Ottawa to Montreal: A Milestone Moment
This year, the SPXpresso team boarded a train to Montreal for a special year-end trip. For many students, it was their first time traveling independently and it symbolized just how much confidence and independence they've gained.
It wasn't just a fun day. It was a celebration of growth, courage, and the belief that all students deserve the chance to shine.
Sharing Their Story with the Community
SPXpresso students also showcased their business at Untapped, a city-wide event that highlights student entrepreneurship. They represented their school with pride and professionalism, proving that learning doesn't just happen behind a desk.
Their journey came full circle when they presented SPXpresso to Director of Education Tom D'Amico, incoming Director Mary Donaghy, and the senior team at the Ottawa Catholic School Board office a moment that captured what it means to Be Community and Be Well.
Nourishing New Beginnings, One Cup at a Time
SPXpresso is more than a coffee cart. It's a living example of what happens when students are seen, supported, and celebrated. It reflects our commitment to inclusive education, innovation, and Catholic values and it's one more reason to believe in the power of possibility.
At OCSB, we don't just teach we build bridges and nourish new beginnings. One coffee, one conversation, one student at a time.
