ST. CLAIR COLLEGE
Work integrated learning provides ‘true win-win' for students and local organization

July 16, 2025

A collaboration between St. Clair College's Community and Justice Services program and New Beginnings of Windsor is providing work integrated learning opportunities for students, preparation for entry into the workforce - and in some cases - jobs.

The work integrated learning component blends in-class, online and experiential learning opportunities where students gain hands-on knowledge to enhance their employability, develop interpersonal skills, and transition to the workplace.

Following field placement, second-year CJS students complete a capstone project, which is the culmination of learning throughout the program, in partnership with New Beginnings. New Beginnings is a local agency that provides a continuum of integrative services including individual, family, specialized school programs, and outreach across service sectors of youth justice, mental health, employment and education.

Now in its third year, the New Beginnings and Community and Justice Services collaboration challenges students to complete research and create program proposals for implementation in the field by pairing student groups with agency employees who act as mentors through the semester.

"Our partnership with the Community and Justice Services program has been an incredibly rewarding experience," said Stacey Yannacopolous, the Executive Director of New Beginnings. "Through the capstone partnership, students bring fresh perspectives and a deep commitment to community service as they research our agency, identify service gaps, and collaborate with our team to design initiatives that support the vulnerable populations we serve at New Beginnings, such as high-risk youth."

"It's a meaningful form of experiential learning that not only benefits the students but also strengthens our capacity to respond to real-world needs in innovative and informed ways," Yannacopolous said.

Students rave about the work integrated learning because it takes them out of the classroom and allows them to hone their learned skills in a real-world setting.

"Participating in this capstone project was a meaningful experience that allowed me to grow both personally and professionally," said Neimat Elmahi, a second-year Community and Justice Services student. "Our mentor's support helped us stay focused, overcome setbacks, and work more effectively as a team. These are skills that I know will benefit me in my future career, especially in fields where teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving are essential."

The experiences shared by students speak to an important aspect of community care: teamwork.

"Working in a group helped me practice listening, be patient, and make sure everyone has a voice. These are skills that are important in any job, especially in fields where we work with people who need support," said Nikita Nikita, also a second-year student in the program. "I am proud of what we made as a team, and I'm thankful for the chance to learn and grow together."

"What makes this partnership unique is the depth of experiential learning it's not just observation, but meaningful engagement. Students immerse themselves in our work, contribute thoughtful research, and co-create solutions alongside experienced mentors working in their field of interest," said Yannacopolous. "This hands-on approach allows them to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, while New Beginnings benefits from their energy, insights, and innovative thinking."

This unique endeavor has led to program adoption by New Beginnings as well as offers of employment for students.

"It is a remarkable way for students to put all their learning into action and see meaningful results," said Melissa Kakuk, program coordinator for Community and Justice Services.

"It's a true win-win, and we're committed to continuing this collaboration to help shape the next generation of justice service professionals while deepening our impact in the community," Yannacopolous said.
