St. Mary's College (SMC) was honoured to welcome the Mayor to the school for a special cheque presentation in support of its annual Operation Smile Campaign a student-led initiative that has been inspiring change for 19 years. During the visit, the Mayor presented a generous $500 donation to the students for their long-standing commitment to leadership, which will be donated to Operation Smile.
Planned and executed entirely by students, the St. Mary's College Operation Smile Campaign raises awareness about the life-threatening effects of severe cleft conditions affecting children worldwide. Through powerful presentations to their peers, students shine a light on the reality of social injustices and encourage their school community to take action. This year, Operation Smile SMC raised $7,761.19, which will provide 32 new smiles to children worldwide.

Throughout the week-long fundraiser, students organize inclusive and engaging activities for Grades 9-12, including a dodgeball tournament, themed dress-down days, and the sale of homemade "Smile" cookies and Smiley fries prepared by Food and Nutrition classes. Students also design and sell a special "Smile" hoodie, available both within and beyond the school community, with proceeds supporting the campaign's goal of funding life-changing cleft lip and palate surgeries.
"For 19 years, our students have demonstrated what it truly means to lead with compassion," said Rita Trecroce, teacher and Operation Smile mentor at St. Mary's College. "The Operation Smile Campaign is a powerful example of faith in action. Our students not only raise funds they raise awareness, inspire empathy, and remind us all that we have a responsibility to care for one another. I am incredibly proud of their dedication and their commitment to making a difference in the lives of children around the world."
"Continued involvement from the St. Mary's College student body in the Operation Smile Campaign benefits both the recipients of the campaign and the students who participate in it. When students take the lead through initiatives like this, they are not only supporting other children and families, they are strengthening the values of compassion, service and leadership across Sault Ste. Marie."
For nearly two decades, the Operation Smile Campaign at SMC has been a powerful demonstration of compassion, leadership, and service. Through this initiative, students develop strong leadership skills while fostering empathy and a deep commitment to justice.
