Humans of My Community: SJS Bridging Generations

April 8, 2026
The Grade 8 students recently took part in a heartfelt Catholic Service Learning Project called Humans of My Community, inspired by the well-loved storytelling project Humans of New York. Through this experience, students were paired with seniors from our local age-friendly community group, where they had the opportunity to listen, learn, and connect in a meaningful way.

They thoughtfully created a set of interview questions that and  met with their senior partner.  Students explored the lives of their partner, hearing stories about growing up, careers, life in Red Lake, and the moments they are most proud of. While many students were initially a little nervous stepping into something so new and outside their comfort zone, those feelings quickly faded. In their place grew confidence, curiosity, and genuine joy as conversations unfolded and connections deepened.

Back at school, students carefully crafted one-page biographies to honour the stories they had been entrusted with. On Monday, March 30th, they will have the special opportunity to return and present these biographies to their senior partners a full-circle moment that celebrates both the stories shared and the relationships formed.

This beautiful experience brought to life many Catholic virtues, including respect for the dignity of every personcompassioncommunity, and solidarity. By taking the time to truly listen and value the experiences of others, our students lived out Christ's call to love and serve one another, reminding us all of the power of connection across generations.
