MCMASTER UNIVERSITY
$2M gift from Walter and Maria Schroeder boosts nursing and physician assistant programs

June 5, 2026

McMaster University is celebrating the generosity of alumnus Walter Schroeder, MBA '69, LLD '24, and his wife Maria, who have made a new $2-million gift through the Schroeder Foundation to enhance the student experience in the School of Nursing and the Physician Assistant Education Program.

This latest gift builds upon the Schroeders' philanthropic legacy at McMaster, which includes a $10-million gift in 2020 to establish the Schroeder Allergy and Immunology Research Institute. The institute has since become a global leader in the treatment and prevention of life-threatening allergies.

McMaster celebrates a $2-million gift from Walter and Maria Schroeder to enrich student learning in Nursing and Physician Assistant programs.

"Maria and I both grew up in underserved communities," said Walter Schroeder, a long-time member of the McMaster Alumni Gallery.

"We saw how one or two opportunities could change a life, put an entire family on a new path, and create benefits that endure over time."

"We hope our newest gift to my alma mater will help McMaster create more of those opportunities and support the ongoing improvement of health care across the country through the next generation of nurses and physician assistants."

Paul O'Byrne, vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences and dean of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, voiced his appreciation for the Schroeders' continued commitment to McMaster.

"We thank Walter and Maria for another significant contribution to Canadian health research and care," said O'Byrne.

"Their ongoing philanthropic support will help develop health-care professionals who provide patients with compassionate and exceptional care.

"McMaster has a tremendous track record of educating and training outstanding clinical staff, and this gift will significantly elevate our work."

Bolstering excellence in nursing

The Schroeders' investment in the School of Nursing has two components. The first established the endowed Schroeder Chair in Undergraduate Nursing Pedagogy, the first chair of its kind in Canada.

The chairholder will integrate new teaching models, adopt novel approaches to experiential learning and revise the curricula, ensuring McMaster continues to be a world leader in nursing education.

Joanna Pierazzo was appointed the inaugural chairholder in June 2025.

"The Schroeders' generosity is allowing us to accelerate the modernization of our nursing curriculum," said Pierazzo.

"With their support, we're ensuring McMaster-trained nurses remain at the forefront of addressing today's most complex health-care challenges."

The gift also created the Schroeder Nursing Finish Line Awards, providing financial support to nursing students in their undergraduate studies. The awards will help learners through the early steps of becoming professional nurses by providing critical funding for activities such as fees for nursing exams or obtaining a license to practice. The aim is to help more nursing graduates move quickly and comfortably from their academic studies to working in the health-care system.

"This gift from the Schroeders comes at a crucial time, when there is a clear need in our country for more exceptionally educated nurses," said Sandra Carroll, vice-dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences and executive director of the School of Nursing.

"The new chair will help ensure our school provides an evolving, engaging, inspiring and effective learning experience, while the new awards offer financial support for students at just the right time to help them focus on completing their studies and launching their careers."

Training the next generation of physician assistants

The Schroeders' generosity is also benefiting McMaster's Physician Assistant Education Program, launched in 2008 as the first program of its kind in Ontario.

Part of the gift created the Schroeder Physician Assistant Awards, the first philanthropically funded student awards tailored to physician assistant learners in Ontario. The awards will provide essential funding to help alleviate the challenges of paying for tuition, textbooks and other educational resources.

The new awards are particularly valuable, as a significant number of applicants and students come from equity-deserving communities.

"Our Physician Assistant Education Program offers an intensive, hands-on, in-person medical training experience that continues to attract a high number of outstanding applicants each year," said Kristen Burrows, the program's assistant dean.

"With the generous support of Walter and Maria Schroeder, these new awards provide a powerful way to support our students and foster an even more diverse and talented cohort."

Advancing Canada's health-care system

The latest gift from the Schroeders marks another chapter in their mission to strengthen the health-care system.

After graduating from McMaster, Walter Schroeder began his career in the finance sector as a research analyst focused on the credit market.

In 1976, he founded Dominion Bond Rating Service, subsequently building it into one of the world's premier bond rating agencies. After selling the business in 2014, the Schroeder family created the Schroeder Foundation to support priorities related to health-care innovation, education, social empowerment and food allergies.

Currently, the Schroeders are focused on reducing provincial backlogs in surgeries and diagnostic tests through the Schroeder Ambulatory Centre in Richmond Hill, which opened in October 2025.
