PEACE RIVER SCHOOL DIVISION
Peace River High School opens White Buffalo Lodge

October 21, 2024

Students at Peace River High School now have a dedicated space to take part in Indigenous smudging ceremonies, learn from Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and enjoy other outdoor education opportunities.

On Friday, October 4, Peace High staff and other invited guests gathered to officially open the White Buffalo Lodge, Peace River High School's permanent restorative circle. Elder Dave Matilpi guided the ceremony and shared the meaning behind the structure's name.

The restorative circle's name has a layered meaning. The White Buffalo is a sacred symbol of harmony, peace and balance in many Indigenous cultures. The restorative circle was constructed to be a place for the school's Indigenous students to be able to practice, celebrate and share their culture with the entire student body. The proposal for the restorative circle was originally put forward by Teacher Mr. Jon White.

Moving forward, the Peace River School Division is excited to see the White Buffalo Lodge used as an additional tool to enrich student life in Peace River through experiential, outdoor learning.
