With the help of local Franco-Ontarian artist Mique Michelle, students from École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord (Blind River) took part in the creation of a new mural for their school. This creative project based on collaboration, conversation and the use of color enabled students to share in a collective artistic experience.
Through this multidisciplinary activity, students explored graffiti art techniques and were invited to reflect on important matters such as their identity as proud Franco-Ontarians, their community and the values that mean the most to them.
Guided by Mique Michelle, students identified various themes and messages they wished to convey with their collective art piece. In small groups, they each painted a part of the mural and added their personal touches. The eagle, a significant emblem for the Jeunesse-Nord school community, can be found at the heart of this mural. The eagle's wings reveal a multitude of symbols that carry great meaning for students and staff.
Mique Michelle is a Franco-Ontarian artist from West Nipissing. She uses graffiti as a way to create awareness on the challenges faced by visible and invisible minorities. Her murals can be found around the world.
'During this activity, Mique Michelle gathered our school around the fact that although we are all different, one thing unites us all: our love and school pride!
