On Friday, September 12, 2025, Canadore College and Nipissing University welcomed the community to the Education Centre campus under sunny skies for the 20th Annual Welcome Pow Wow, an important gathering that celebrates Indigenous cultures and the beginning of fall term.
"This annual event brings both campuses together to welcome all new and returning students for a day of celebration, culture and learning," shared Patty Chabbert, Director, Office of Indigenous Initiatives at Nipissing University. "It offers students an opportunity to connect to the land, language and community".
"The Welcome Pow Wow is one of the most special gatherings of our year. It's a chance for students, staff, and community to come together, reconnect, and celebrate the vibrancy of Indigenous culture. Each year it reminds us of the importance of belonging, sharing, and starting the year in a good way, together," said Sarah Julian, Director, First Peoples' Centre and Indigenous Engagement at Canadore College.
This year, local schools also joined in the celebrations. Attendees enjoyed dances, traditional songs, regalia, artisans, vendors, and food, and had a chance to immerse themselves in Indigenous culture while connecting with fellow students and community members.
"This year's Pow Wow was extra special as we gathered together to celebrate this milestone year," shared Ricki-Lee Scheck, one of the Pow Wow organizers and Indigenous Student Success & Development Coordinator within the Office of Indigenous Initiatives at Nipissing University. "The Welcome Pow Wow always starts the academic year off in a good way and provides a welcoming atmosphere for attendees to learn more about Indigenous traditions and build connections with the community."
The Welcome Pow Wow is organized by Nipissing University's Enji giigdoyang - Office of Indigenous Initiatives and Canadore College's First Peoples' Centre.
