Universities Canada is proud to announce its participation in the newly formed Canada-U.S. Trade Council (CUSTC), a collaborative initiative uniting industry leaders, labour organizations, key stakeholders and expert advisors to tackle critical challenges in Canada's trade relationship with the United States.
Universities are gateways to opportunity, empowering millions of Canadians to find secure jobs, earn strong incomes and build a better future. It makes their involvement in the Canada-U.S. Trade Council essential.
"Tariffs would have profound effects on Canadian universities - which are critical economic anchors for their communities and essential contributors to our future workforce," said Gabriel Miller, president and CEO of Universities Canada. "Canada's universities believe in the importance of a strong, collaborative and always respectful partnership with our U.S. neighbours, and we are proud to be working closely with Canadian business, labour and government leaders to protect our economy and build our shared prosperity."
CUSTC includes participants from a variety of sectors (steel, aluminum, forest products, oil and gas, agri-food, dairy, chemistry, banking, as well as broader industry groups such as the Business Council of Canada, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters) and leading labour organizations.
The group will convene regularly to share information and ideas for how best to approach the tariff discussions and the subsequent CUSMA review phase. The group is not a lobbying or an advocacy organization but will focus instead on sharing information and ensuring an ongoing conversation, including with key government officials who have responsibilities on these files.
