To further support the accessibility of post-secondary education in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Honourable Bernard Davis, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, is announcing improvements to the provincial Student Aid program.
The provincial Student Aid program enhancements include:
- Increased weekly provincial student loan and provincial student grant limits by 20 per cent, from $100 per week to $120 per week, and corresponding increases for Faculty of Medicine students at Memorial University and a 20 per cent increase to loans for out of province students. This change will increase the value of available assistance to students who are currently receiving the maximum allowable financial aid.
- Increased per-course value of Memorial University Tuition Relief Grant, from $345 per course to $420 per course. This change will adjust the per course value of the Tuition Relief Grant to align with tuition increases at the university.
- Lowered program duration eligibility threshold for NL Debt Reduction Grant Program, from 80 weeks to 60 weeks. This will allow for students in 60-week or longer programs to become eligible for debt reduction.
These changes will allow for more students to access financial aid to support their post-secondary studies. An estimated 5,000 students accessing student aid will be impacted by these improvements to the program.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and the Government of Canada work together to provide student financial assistance to residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. Both loans and grants are available to help students access and pay for post-secondary education.
Applications for the 2025-26 program year are now being accepted. Students can apply for both federal and provincial financial assistance using just one application on the StudentAidNL website. Those pursuing post-secondary education in the fall are encouraged to apply early.
Budget 2025 allocated $33.5 million to the Student Aid program.
Quote
"Access to post-secondary education is foundational to support not only students, but also the workforce and future of our province. These enhancements to the provincial Student Aid program will ensure that more students can access student aid, and that more funding is available for those students. I encourage any student in need of financial support during post-secondary to consider applying for Student Aid. Loans are interest free, and eligible students can have 100 per cent of their provincial loan forgiven."
