ALGONQUIN COLLEGE
Merit Ontario helps power new lab at Algonquin College to modernize electrical apprenticeship program and support growing enrolment

September 10, 2025

Algonquin College is proud to announce that Merit Ontario has sponsored the renovation of a learning space in the Ottawa campus to convert it into a state-of-the-art, fully equipped electrical training lab. In recognition of Merit Ontario's sponsorship, this new lab, located in the B Building, has been named the Merit Ontario Electrical Lab.

This sponsorship is supported through the Merit Ontario for Apprenticeship program, which seeks to boost the skilled trades workforce by helping apprentices complete their training and pursue rewarding careers.

The Merit Ontario Electrical Lab is now the second electrical lab in the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE). This new space increases ACCE's capacity and modernizes the Electrical Techniques - Apprenticeship program as part of a broader effort to harmonize apprenticeship training across Canada.

"The expansion of our facilities supports our growth and reflects the new curriculum standard for electrical apprenticeships that has been launched in Ontario," said Katherine Root, Dean of the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence. "Part of the revised curriculum standard puts greater emphasis on advanced fire alarm systems. The Merit Ontario Electrical Lab addresses this need and provides our apprentices with a dedicated space where they can further master these skills."

As part of the sponsorship, Merit Ontario will establish a brand presence on campus to highlight the work they do in workforce development, particularly through the Merit Ontario for Apprenticeship program.

"We believe education transforms lives, so the Merit Ontario Electrical Lab is more than just a name it's a statement of our values," said Troy Heath, Merit Ontario's Director of Operations and Training. "Supporting the trades is a social responsibility we take quite seriously because it represents a strategic investment in Ontario's workforce. We're proud to partner with Algonquin College to provide learners with the facilities they need to thrive."

Sponsored labs, like Merit Ontario's, are vital to the ongoing development of the College's infrastructure and academic programming. These collaborations enhance campus facilities, elevate the student experience, and demonstrate that Algonquin College and its industry partners are equally committed to investing in the next generation of skilled trades professionals.
