Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) has received $25 million in capital funding from the federal government to further support the development of its School of Medicine in Brampton, Ont., as announced in the 2025-26 Budget tabled earlier on Nov. 4.
The investment is a historic milestone for TMU, the City of Brampton and the people of Peel region, and recognizes the national importance of the medical school designed to address the physician shortage and expand access to primary care across Ontario and Canada.
This federal investment builds on the strong foundation established by the Province of Ontario's leadership in creating the School of Medicine and reflects ongoing collaboration between all levels of government to improve access to care and expand medical education.
TMU is deeply appreciative of the advocacy and partnership of Brampton's federal Members of Parliament, whose efforts helped bring this opportunity to fruition, and of the federal Ministers of Finance, Health and Infrastructure for recognizing the school's national significance and potential for impact.
A transformative investment in health care
"The federal government's confidence in TMU underscores what we already know: That our model for medical education - community-based, access-driven and innovation-focused - represents a new chapter in Canadian health care," said TMU President and Vice-Chancellor Mohamed Lachemi.

Supporting Canada's newest medical school
TMU officially launched its School of Medicine earlier in 2025, welcoming an inaugural class of 94 MD students and 105 resident students. The school is the first new medical school in the Greater Toronto Area in over 100 years.
The inaugural cohort of undergraduate medical learners was selected from more than 6,400 applicants, reflecting the best and brightest of the next generation of physicians.
The federal capital funding investment reinforces TMU's reputation as an institution committed to transforming medical education in Canada and addressing critical health-care needs in underserved communities.
