YUKON UNIVERSITY
Six YukonU programs can provide pathways to eligible occupations under expanded Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program

February 13, 2026

Yukon University is highlighting recent changes to the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness (CSLF) Program, following a federal announcement on December 31, 2025, that expands eligibility to additional health and social service professions working in rural communities.

All Yukon communities are currently considered eligible under the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness program. The expanded eligibility creates new opportunities for current and prospective students to pursue education and careers in essential fields, while reducing the long-term cost of post-secondary education.

Yukon University's Funding Advisor, Matthew Pecore, notes the significance of the change for students:

"We know that taking on student loans can feel daunting. After all, no one wants to graduate with debt hanging over their head. The changes to the Canada Student Loan Forgiveness Program open doors for current and prospective students to pursue education that may have otherwise felt out of reach."

Combined with Yukon University's competitive tuition fees, the expanded federal support strengthens Yukon University's position as an accessible and practical choice for students seeking meaningful careers in the North.

Graduates working in approved fields may apply for loan forgiveness for each year of eligible employment, with the amount forgiven increasing annually for up to five years. Yukon University offers a number of programs that can provide a pathway to eligible occupations include:

  • Health Care Assistant (Certificate)
  • Practical Nurse (Diploma)
  • Early Learning (Diploma)
  • Social Work (Degree)
  • Education - Yukon Native Teacher Education Program (Degree)
  • Education - Bachelor of Education After Degree (Degree)

Beyond reducing financial barriers for students, the program supports Yukon communities by helping graduates transition into essential roles in health care, education, and social services. These professions are critical to the wellbeing, resilience, and long-term sustainability of communities across the territory.

Students, prospective students, or community members seeking help understanding eligibility, estimating potential savings, or navigating the application process are encouraged to contact Yukon University's Funding Advisor, Matthew Pecore, at financialaid@yukonu.ca, or visit C1228 on campus.
