Grande Prairie Public School Division Board of Trustees Approve 2026-2027 Budget

June 8, 2026

The Grande Prairie Public School Division's Board of Trustees has approved the 2026-2027 operating budget, reaffirming its commitment to student success through a strategic, student-focused approach that aligns with the Board's guiding principles.

The approved budget of $124.5 million reflects a transition toward long-term financial stability, supported by increased provincial funding and thoughtful use of resources. Provincial funding for the 2026-2027 school year is projected to increase by 4.7 million from the previous year. While enrolment is projected to decrease slightly by 0.2 percent to approximately 8,838 students, the Board has maintained its existing staffing and resource allocation process to ensure continuity and stability at the classroom level and throughout the system.

"This budget reflects our ongoing effort of putting students first while strengthening our financial position," said Joan Nellis, Board Chair of GPPSD. "We are grateful to the province for the increased allocation, which allows us to deliver a $124.5 million budget that honours our commitment to fiscal responsibility without compromising the quality of education within our community."

The 2026-2027 budget continues to prioritize key areas that support student well-being and achievement, including:

  • Mental health and wellness supports
  • Inclusive education
  • Early intervention strategies
  • Ongoing curriculum implementation

Student instruction remains the primary area of investment, accounting for the majority of expenditures, with continued support for classroom learning environments and student programming.

"While we expect only a slight shift in enrollment, our focus remains the same: providing safe, high-quality, and equitable learning environments," said James Robinson, Superintendent of Schools. "This budget makes a meaningful impact by providing resources we need to continue supporting student success."
