Universities Canada supports the federal government's ambitious economic agenda, and our members are advancing these priorities through research, innovation and talent development. Budget 2026 creates opportunities to build on this work.
Canada's universities are a national strength. Their skilled graduates, research and innovation are essential to meeting Canada's economic and national security priorities. Budget 2026's investments in defence innovation, including quantum, space and emerging technologies, create opportunities to put more university research and expertise to work.
Across the country, universities are preparing Canadians for a changing workforce, advancing discoveries that strengthen key industries and working with businesses and communities to put new knowledge into practice.
Universities Canada welcomes the government's commitment to maintain its target of 150,000 new international student arrivals annually from 2027 to 2029, as stated in the Immigration Levels Plan. Predictable immigration policies are essential to rebuilding confidence in Canada's international education system and attracting global talent.
"Canada has set ambitious goals for its economic future. Universities are helping to achieve them through the talent they develop, the research they advance and the partnerships they build with businesses and communities," said Gabriel Miller, President and CEO of Universities Canada. "That work is happening across the country every day. We are working with the federal government to build on these strengths and deliver even more for Canadians."
The government's recent national security strategy recognizes that Canada's sovereignty depends on more than defence capabilities. Economic resilience, technological innovation, highly skilled talent and trusted international partnerships are equally important. Universities Canada welcomes the commitment to expand engagement with universities and other research partners through new and existing advisory bodies. Canada's universities are already contributing to these priorities, and deeper collaboration will strengthen that work.
Universities Canada is working with federal partners to strengthen Canada's economic security, prosperity and resilience, putting more university research, talent and innovation to work for Canadians.
