University College of the North (UCN) is celebrating the grand opening of its new Bachelor in Ininimowin program. This marks an important step forward in Indigenous language education and revitalization in northern Manitoba.
The grand openings took place at both The Pas and Thompson campuses, bringing together students, faculty, Elders, community members, and guests. The event recognizes the launch of a program designed to strengthen Indigenous language learning and create new opportunities for students and communities.
The Bachelor in Ininimowin program provides students with the opportunity to develop proficiency in Cree while learning about local histories, cultures, and worldviews through language. The program supports students on a pathway toward fluency while developing skills in communication, research, critical thinking and problem-solving.
"Language is an important part of culture, identity and community," said Doug Lauvstad, President and Vice-Chancellor of UCN. "The Bachelor in Ininimowin creates opportunities for students to strengthen their language skills while preparing for careers where Indigenous language knowledge is increasingly important. This program reflects UCN's commitment to providing relevant, culturally grounded education in the North."
The program offers multiple pathways for students, with opportunities to complete a University Certificate in Ininimowin after one year, a University Diploma after two years, or continue to a three-year Bachelor's degree. No previous Indigenous language experience is required. The Bachelor in Ininimowin is offered at both UCN's The Pas and Thompson campuses, providing northern students with greater access to post-secondary Indigenous language education.
