BROCK UNIVERSITY
Mixed recycling program simplifies sustainable choices on campus

October 17, 2024

Brock University has taken a significant step towards a more sustainable campus by making it easier for the community to dispose of recyclable items.

With the switch to a new single-stream or mixed recycling program, all recyclable materials can be placed in the same bin. Garbage and recycling bins across campus have been updated with signage explaining how to dispose of different items.

Materials collected in the new mixed recycling bins include:

  • Plastic bottles and containers
  • Paper, boxboard and cardboard
  • Magazines and newspapers
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Metal cans and clean aluminum foil

Styrofoam and plastic film of any kind are no longer accepted for recycling on campus and should be placed in garbage bins. Large cardboard pieces can be folded and placed in designated grey carts found across campus for recycling.

As well as simplifying the recycling process by removing the need for pre-sorting, the switch to mixed recycling will reduce emissions by using a single truck for collection and transportation to the material recovery facility in Niagara Falls.
