WATERLOO REGION DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD
Students, Staff and Volunteers Dig In to Bring New Trees to WRDSB Schools

November 21, 2024

Students and staff all across the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) are taking action to be good stewards for the natural environment and communities around us.

Trillium Public School

At Trillium Public School in Kitchener, students and staff came together for a Community Canopy tree planting. The new trees will help to add more shade to the school yard, and will support the natural habitat that surrounds the school.

These new trees were planted on the school grounds in partnership with:

  • Trillium PS School Council
  • Green Communities Canada
  • The City of Kitchener
  • Reep Green Solutions
  • Definity

Importantly, this tree planting effort at Trillium PS contributes to their ongoing work as an EcoSchool. The Trillium Student Green Team & Garden Club helped to plant, water and will maintain the trees until they are rooted.

Riverside Public School

At Riverside Public School in Elmira, thanks to the generous donation of trees and time from Earthscape Catalyst and Trees for Woolwich, student members of the Riverside Eco Schools Team planted 162 trees.

The trees planted include six native species, Red Maple, Bur Oak, Gray Dogwood, Hackberry, Sycamore, and White Spruce. They also planted six Red Oak trees that were started from an acorn three years ago by students at Riverside PS.

In time, these trees will grow into a forest, helping to create shade for all those who access the school yard, and supporting wildlife biodiversity.

New Microforests Across the WRDSB

In partnership with Sustainable Waterloo Region, new microforests have been planted this school year at:

  • Cedar Creek Public School
  • Conestogo Public School
  • Oak Creek Public School
  • Southwood Secondary School
  • Woodland Park Public School

As those trees grow, they'll create a vibrant microforest with long-term environmental and aesthetic benefits for the school, surrounding neighbourhood, and community.
