At last night's (Nov 19) Board Meeting, District School Board of Niagara (DBSN) Trustees approved "Thundering Heights Public School," as the official name for the new elementary school in Niagara Falls South at Kalar Road and McLeod Road, set to open September 2025.
The Ad Hoc Naming Committee met on October 17 to review the Board's naming policy as well as best practices and next steps. The naming campaign kicked off the following Monday, inviting James Morden and Kate S. Durdan Public School community members to submit suggested names along with their rationale through a link posted on the school websites.
On November 12, members of the Naming Committee gathered at Kate S. Durdan Public School to help select a preferred name. Submissions from the community were narrowed down to 30 unique suggestions that adhere to DSBN's criteria. Using an inclusive and equitable multi-step voting system - which included a review of all names and provided rationales - voting members shortlisted three names.
"After a robust discussion, the committee - through consensus - determined that the new school's name would be Thundering Heights Public School," said Darren VanHooydonk, Superintendent of Student Achievement and Well-Being. "Feedback from committee members was very positive; they feel the name conveys power and energy, with reference to both Niagara Falls and the Escarpment. It was also chosen to help inspire students to reach their full potential."
"We are grateful for the care and consideration shown by the Naming Committee. This important process lays a solid foundation for the exciting work ahead. With construction progressing, we are one step closer to building new schools that will support DSBN's growing community. We extend our thanks to the Ministry of Education for funding this project and for their ongoing support in meeting the needs of our school board. We look forward to welcoming students, staff, and the community to this new learning space in September 2025," said Kelly Pisek, Director of Education.
