ON JANUARY 23
Lethbridge Polytechnic partnering to host 2025 Irrigated Crop Production Update

January 6, 2025

Lethbridge Polytechnic is once again partnering with industry, farmers, academic partners and government representatives from across Western Canada for the 2025 Irrigated Crop Production Update. This one-day session will be held 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 23, at the Lethbridge Agri-Food Hub and Trade Centre.

Registration is required to attend, and the early-bird deadline is Dec. 24.

"Irrigation is such an integral part of the agricultural make-up in southern Alberta, and this conference is a great opportunity for industry and experts to come together to plan and think about what to expect in the coming months," says Dr. Willemijn Appels, senior research chair with the Mueller Irrigation Research Group at Lethbridge Polytechnic. "Continuing collaboration and partnerships will be key to overcoming challenges and ensuring a sustainable future for the agriculture sector."

While current snowpack and reservoir levels look more promising than last year, Appels says it is still too early to predict spring moisture accurately.

The conference will feature several presentations, such as:

  • a farmer panel discussing their approach and management of water in 2024;
  • a keynote speaker who will address future trends and patterns for water availability in the Rocky Mountains and Canadian Prairies;
  • a session on irrigation scheduling and strategies; and
  • discussing pests and disease management for irrigated crops.

The Regional Innovation Network of Southern Alberta (RINSA) applied research networking event will follow conference presentations. Attendees can enjoy food and drink while continuing to network and tour the tradeshow.

"Southern Alberta is a unique repository for agricultural knowledge, and sessions such as these showcase our combined ability to adapt and overcome significant challenges such as poor moisture conditions and drought," says Dr. Andrew Dunlop, associate vice-president of applied research at Lethbridge Polytechnic. "I look forward to the many conversations to be had in January as we look toward promoting a strong and sustainable agriculture sector."

For those interested in continuing education credits, Lethbridge Polytechnic has also applied for Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) and Pesticide Applicator credits for the session.
