April 11, 2025

On Thursday, March 20, approximately 50 Nipissing University students gathered in the small cafeteria for an event focused on mental health, connection, and support. The event began with a self-serve taco bar, and event MC, Alexander Domingos, welcoming everyone and setting the stage for an afternoon of food, conversation, and inspiration.

The highlight of the event was a powerful talk by Matthieu Bonin, an author, mental health advocate, mentor, coach, and speaker. Bonin, known for his down-to-earth approach, shared his insights on the importance of embracing one's true, authentic self, with his messages resonating deeply with attendees.

The event also showcased a range of resources available to students, including information about NUListens, the MENtal Strength Initiative, Mental Health & Wellbeing services, the new Addictions Awareness Project, the Canadian Mental Health Association North Bay and NUSU Clubs and groups.

The vision for the event came from Nipissing University faculty member Dr. Melissa Corrente. "I wanted to plan something to help reduce the stigma of talking about mental health on campus. It's important to create a safe and supportive environment to connect with others," she shared.

The success of the event was a result of collaboration among many dedicated individuals. With special thanks to Bryanna Kelly, Peer Support & Outreach Lead, Terra Nevrencan, Student Intervention Specialist, Alexander Domingos, Mental Health & Wellbeing Assistant & MENtal Strength Initiative Lead, Malinda Hirvilammi, Health Promotions Coordinator of CMHA North Bay & District, Matthieu Bonin, guest-speaker and author, and the Nipissing University Peer Supporters in attendance. The event was made possible through a grant from the Student Initiatives Fund with Student Development & Services, as well as a generous donation from the Canadian Mental Health Association North Bay & District.
