SURREY SCHOOLS
New Intimate Images Protection Services welcomed by Surrey Schools

April 16, 2024

The Surrey School District welcomes new legislation and online tools created to help people who have been impacted by the threat or sharing of intimate images.

The Intimate Images Protection Act, which took effect in February, provides a legal path for victims to regain control of their images and seek compensation from unauthorized image sharers.

At the same time the act came into effect, the province also launched the Intimate Images Protection Service (IIPS), an online tool to help victims and families navigate resources and assistance available to them. These supports can include a step-by-step guide on how to file an image removal claim through the Civil Resolution Tribunal, directly speaking with an IIPS member about your situation, and more.

Jaclyn Blaney, Manager of Surrey Schools' Safe Schools department, said the new law and resources streamline services for youth facing image-sharing issues and help reduce barriers connecting users to the proper supports.

"Historically, we've always worked alongside the police in dealing with these types of issues on a case-by-case basis," said Blaney. "Now, youth have a government-created process in place that they can easily access, giving them an additional means to attain support."

For some people affected by the sharing of intimate images, even just the prospect of reaching out for help can be daunting - something the new resources may also help overcome.

"Whether it's embarrassment or fear, there can be all kinds of reasons somebody might not want to come forward," said Blaney. "These new supports provide them with another avenue to reach out and start the resolution process directly.

However, Blaney is quick to note that anyone wanting to come forward is still encouraged to do so.

"We just want to remind people that if they or somebody they know is affected by the sharing of intimate images, there are now numerous ways to go about starting the process to get those images removed and to have the people sharing the images held accountable."

The IIPS contains a wealth of information and resources, including age-specific support paths for those aged 18 and under and those 19 and over. There are also links to external partners and resources, as well as information for parents and caregivers on how to support their child.
