During the June 18, 2024, Regular Board Meeting, the Board of Education approved an elementary school configuration of Kindergarten to Grade 7 and a secondary configuration of Grades 8 to 12 for the Salmon Arm urban and rural feeder schools. This new configuration reduces school transitions, allowing students to spend more time with their teachers. This continuity fosters stronger connections with caring adults, enhances students' sense of belonging, and improves engagement within the school community. The Board also resolved to defer its decision on adopting a two or three secondary school model for Salmon Arm, pending further information anticipated in fall 2024.
After reviewing all data from previous Board meetings and giving it thoughtful consideration, the Board of Education unanimously agreed to adopt a two-secondary school model for the community of Salmon Arm. This decision was made during the November 19, 2024, Regular Board meeting.
While no decisions have yet been made regarding a transition plan for Salmon Arm's urban and rural feeder schools, it remains a priority. The SD83 Leadership Team is working toward finalizing the plan by mid-December. Once completed, it will be shared with staff, partners, Parent Advisory Councils, Rightsholders, families, and the community. School communities can expect that members of the Senior Leadership team will be holding sessions to discuss the transition impacts for their children. Given the decision was delayed by a month, these sessions may run into early January.
This thoughtful decision reflects the Board's commitment to providing students with an enriched educational experience. It aligns with District's Mission: "to empower students to become confident, curious, and caring individuals who thrive in their learning, relationships, and community."
