UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK
UNB's CNER opens cutting-edge lab to support Canada's nuclear energy future

August 8, 2025

On July 30, 2025, the Centre for Nuclear Research (CNER) at the University of New Brunswick (UNB) formally opened their new Advanced Nuclear Reactors Laboratory (ANRL). With support from the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Research New Brunswick, this new infrastructure will play a significant role in growing strategic areas of research and development and addressing industry needs in the areas of workforce development and technical support.

UNB is the only university with nuclear engineering courses east of Ontario, and UNB's CNER is actively expanding its network of national and international partnerships to meet the rising momentum for nuclear energy in Canada. Currently engaged with dozens of industrial, academic and government organizations, the new ANRL at CNER will broaden both the scope and scale of its collaborations.

Key partnerships with Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL), Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, major Canadian power utilities, and leading academic and industry consortia including the University Network of Excellence in Nuclear Engineering (UNENE) and Conexus Nuclear Inc. (formerly the CANDU Owners Group) are central to CNER's mission. These alliances provide vital pathways for innovation and problem-solving across both conventional nuclear technologies and advanced Generation IV reactor designs, including small modular reactors (SMRs).

In 2023, UNB announced funding from the Governments of Canada and New Brunswick for two projects with the CNER, including the establishment of the Advanced Nuclear Reactors Laboratory.

As Canada continues to prioritize clean energy solutions, UNB's CNER is committed to fostering impactful collaborations that drive progress and deliver results for the nuclear industry.
