CAMBRIAN COLLEGE
Cambrian College Names New Women's Soccer Coaches

April 9, 2024

There will be a new field boss when the Cambrian College's women's soccer team takes to the pitch this fall.

Jason Garforth has been named head coach of the Golden Shield women's varsity team. He has been head coach of the Golden Shield men's soccer team since 2020 and will retain that role.

Jason Garforth is the new head coach of the Cambrian College Golden Shield women's soccer team. He also holds the same position with the men's soccer squad.

"We're excited to have Jason step into this role," says Tim Yu, Cambrian's manager of athletics. "Jason knows his soccer. We're confident the dual coaching role that has brought us success in our volleyball program can be duplicated with our soccer teams. We're very excited to see what Jason will accomplish by bringing a common vision and approach to our soccer program."

Garforth has four decades of experience as a player and coach. He has coached in both England and the United States.

"I am looking forward to the challenge of coaching both teams as we continue to build up men's and women's soccer at Cambrian," says Garforth. "We want both teams to take the next step in their development."

Garforth succeeds Evan Phillips, who was named the assistant coach for the Sudbury Cyclones, the new team in the League 1 Ontario pro-am league.

Last year, the Golden Shield women's squad posted a record of 6-3-1, good for fourth place in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) east division. The men's squad posted a record of 3-6-1, finishing sixth in the division.

The 2024 OCAA soccer season kicks off in October.

Also coming over from the men's squad to serve as assistant coach for the women's team is Ali Abbas.

Ali Abbas is the new assistant coach of the Cambrian College Golden Shield women's soccer team. He also holds the same position with the men's soccer squad.

"Being able to coach both teams is a great opportunity, and we're hoping both teams can enjoy equal levels of success in this upcoming season," adds Abbas.
