Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) schools have a long-standing tradition of excellence in athletics. Elementary student-athletes take part in interschool sports with other SCDSB schools enroute to area and county championships. Secondary student-athletes compete in the Simcoe County Athletic Association (SCAA) during the regular season and represent the SCDSB and their schools in the Georgian Bay Secondary School Association (GBSSA) and Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championships.
Recent highlights
Elementary
In December, Bradford District HS and Fieldcrest ES hosted the Intermediate Girls' county basketball tournament and Banting Memorial HS and Alliston Union PS hosted the Intermediate Boys' county volleyball tournament. Sixteen SCDSB elementary schools in each sport competed for the championship. In basketball, Minesing Central PS took home the title, followed by Guthrie PS, Worsley ES, and Hewitt's Creek PS. In volleyball, Algonquin Ridge PS will hoist the championship banner, with Forest Hill PS finishing second, Huron Park PS in third, and Alliston Union PS in fourth.
In late January, the SCDSB once again hosted the Junior Character in Sport tournament, where Grade 5 students were introduced to 2-Ball', a simple but fun activity combining different game elements into one. Students learned about and participated in the game, and will take their learning back to their schools to implement there. Sixteen SCDSB elementary schools participated in Junior Character in Sport at Eastview SS, with another 12 schools at Banting Memorial HS.
Secondary
In December, SCDSB swimmers showed their pool-tential' at the GBSSA championships, winning 31 gold medals across 58 events, with an additional 56 podium finishes. View the full results on the SCAA website.
