December 17, 2024

Conestoga's School of Applied Computer Science & Information Technology hosted IT Demo Day to showcase student capstone projects.

Students in the Computer Applications Development, Digital Solutions Management and Mobile Solutions Development programs presented their real-world projects that support hands-on learning at the Waterloo campus on December 4.

"Capstone projects provide our students with a unique opportunity to apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges. The Capstone Showcase event is a crucial platform for students to demonstrate their skills, receive valuable feedback and network with potential employers. This experience not only enhances their learning, but also prepares them for successful careers," said Pejman Salehi, executive dean of the School of Applied Computer Science & Information Technology and School of Creative Industries.

The leading teams chosen from each program:

Computer Applications Development

Guelph - Xiao Potato art-sharing platform by Mengyao Zhang, Ray Chen and Ziqi Feng.

Milton - Cross Culture Art for art workshops, courses and events by Jocelyn John Mascarenhas, Aditya Verma and Waquaruddin Marwan Mohammed.

Waterloo - RedThreadWeaver network mapping solution by Amal Chandrappan, Joseph Sabu Palathingal and Martin Zanabria Chavez.

Digital Solutions Management

EazySchedule is a web-based solution to manual shift scheduling challenges faced by small-scale restaurants created by Teena George, Silpha Jackson, Varsha Kuppat Kalladithodi and Isaac Chege Kamau.

Mobile Solutions Development

Smartfarm is a web application that assists farmers in selecting the most suitable crops for land based on location and other factors, as well as guidance on optimal watering for crops created by Apoorva Kayala, Abhijith Kumar, Dipendra Nath and Dikshu Rawat.

Students created a variety of imaginative projects to fill an identified need, presenting their work to visitors and judges.

A top Computer Applications Development (CAD) project was RedThreadWeaver, which simplifies network mapping for IT professionals and network administrators by only requiring them to upload an Excel file and click generate to produce an accurate network diagram effortlessly. The diagram produced is customizable, easily updated by uploading a new file and downloadable as a PDF.

"They can use this to format the diagram and make the whole process faster," said team member Sabu Palanthingal. "You can see it come to life."

MuseHive is a unique platform for indie artists and art enthusiasts aimed at connecting, inspiring and empowering creators through an interactive digital space that makes it easier to market their artwork.

"It all belongs to the artist only," said team member Simoni Solanki. "This platform will help them to showcase their work."

Indie Fusion is a platform designed for artists to share their talents and connect for collaborations.

"This is only for indie artists," said team member Sruthi Kamisetti. "They can showcase their talent and also, at the same time, get opportunities."

The benefit of Indie Fusion is it offers a gathering space for all different artists - singers, dancers, choreographers and more - to make it easy to find all the talent needed for a unique collaboration.

"We have not seen a platform where we can see all the artists together," Kamisetti said.
