At the Ottawa Catholic School Board (OCSB), we know our students are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they're the innovators of today. As technology and artificial intelligence continue to shape our world, helping our students navigate the digital landscape safely, kindly, and responsibly has never been more important.
On October 27, more than 400 students from Grades 4 to 6 gathered at Immaculata High School for an exciting, energetic, and thoughtful presentation by Google Canada, in partnership with MediaSmarts. The event, part of Google's Online Safety Roadshow and Media Literacy Week, focused on empowering students with the tools and knowledge they need to stay safe and positive online.
From learning how to build strong passwords to understanding why kindness matters in every digital interaction, students engaged with interactive lessons that made internet safety both fun and memorable. The Google team were dynamic and relatable, reminding students that if they ever feel unsure or uncomfortable online, they can always turn to a trusted adult, such as their teacher, for support.
"Partnering with Google Canada to bring the Online Safety Roadshow to our students is an important opportunity to help them navigate the digital world with confidence and care," said Mary Donaghy, Director of Education, OCSB.
"We are preparing our learners not just to use technology, but to lead with empathy, integrity, and critical thinking in the digital age."
The event reflected OCSB's ongoing commitment to Be Well, Be Community, and Be Innovative. By working with organizations like Google and MediaSmarts, we are ensuring that every child develops the skills to explore the internet responsibly, engage kindly, and use technology as a force for good.
A big thank you to Google Canada and MediaSmarts for leading such an inspiring and empowering session. Together, we are building a future where our students can thrive, online and beyond.
The future is smart, and with the right guidance, it's safe too.
