CAMPBELL RIVER SCHOOL DISTRICT
Our First Electric School Bus Hits the Road

September 24, 2024

We are excited to introduce our first electric school bus! This new addition to our transportation fleet is a significant step toward reducing our carbon footprint and is one way that we are working towards our strategic goal of evolving for tomorrow, by contributing to a greener future.

What's special about the new bus?

  • It's fully electric. This means zero tailpipe emissions, making it a much cleaner option than traditional diesel buses.
  • It can travel up to 210 kilometers on a full charge and carry 76 passengers. The district has installed fast-charging level 3 chargers at both the bus garage and Sayward School to ensure that the bus can quickly recharge as needed.
  • It's quieter and smoother, providing a safer and more comfortable ride for students.

How was it funded?

The total cost of the bus was $508,781. This was funded by:

  • $286,136 from grants by Clean BC and the Zero Emission Transit fund, thanks to the help of the Association of School Transportation Services of BC (ASTSBC)
  • $222,644 from a capital grant from the Ministry of Education and Child Care.

Where will the bus be used?

The bus is currently being tested on different in-town routes and for field trips. After this trial period, it will be assigned to Route 8, which runs from Sayward to Campbell River. Another electric bus will arrive soon and be assigned to Route 5 in the north end of town.

Why electric?

Electric buses are better for the environment and can help save money. Each electric bus could save us around $12,000 a year on fuel and another $5,000 on maintenance. The buses regenerative braking system helps conserve energy, while its electric heater provides a comfortable cabin temperature without wasting fuel. With quicker acceleration and smooth operation, the buses will help keep our routes timely, ensuring our students get to school safely and comfortably.

This is the beginning of a three-year, three-bus initiative in collaboration with ASTSBC. We are committed to expanding our electric fleet and doing our part to create a healthier environment for our students and community.
