NOVA SCOTIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Centre of Geographic Sciences Industry Expo 2023 to Feature Employers, Research Partner Presentations and Networking Opportunities for Students

January 25, 2023

NSCC's Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS) Industry Expo will be held Monday, January 23 and 24 at the COGS Campus in Lawrencetown. The expo will be kicked off at 6 pm with a presentation from Dr. Tim Webster on his work mapping the impacts of post-tropical cyclone Fiona. The Coastal Flood Prediction and Damage Assessment of the Nova Scotia Coast from Hurricane Fiona presentation is open to students, employees and registered industry partners as well as media.

Dr. Webster, a research scientist with the Applied Geomatics Research Group - part of NSCC's Applied Research department, worked with his team to create an online tool called the Emergency Coastal Flooding Decision Support System. The tool predicts tide and storm surge up to ten days in advance on an interactive flood map. Dr. Webster's research focus is mapping and modeling the earth's surface processes with an airborne topo-bathymetric lidar and other geomatics data to better understand coastal environments. The annual COGS Industry Expo attracts local, national and international sector employers, with this year's event shaping up to be the largest in-person expo to date. The second day of the event involves industry presentations, followed by student and industry networking. Each year, many of the soon-to-be COGS graduates find future employment through the connections made during the two-day event.

On day 2 (Jan. 24), COGS librarians are providing tours of the WK Morrison Special Collection to attendees between 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Media are welcome to attend.
