Team Sudbury Reaches Podium at 2023 Skills Ontario Competition

Photo: Students from Cambrian College, Rainbow District School Board and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board won a total of nine medals this week at the Skills Ontario competition in Toronto. A total of 75 students were part of Team Sudbury at the competition.


It was another show of force for the north as Team Sudbury hit the podium multiple times at the 2023 Skills Ontario competition this week in Toronto.

Team Sudbury is comprised of 75 students plus their coaches from Cambrian College, the Rainbow District School Board, and the Sudbury Catholic District School Board.

It is the fourth time the three organizations have come together as one team and this year was the best showing ever, with a total of nine medals being earned: one gold, one silver, and seven bronze, with students from each organization placing in the top three.

The medal winners from the 2023 Team Sudbury are:

Gold

  • Keaton Garvie, Colin Smith, Cambrian College, Powerline Technician

Silver

  • Jillian Leaman, Cambrian College, Metal Fabricator-Fitter

Bronze

  • Ethan Clancy, Liam Fowler, Cambrian College, Powerline Technician
  • Ian Clipperton, Cambrian College, Automotive Service Technology
  • Anny Garcia Alvarado, Cambrian College, Graphic Design-Studio Production
  • Hunter Perigo, Cambrian College, Heating Systems Technician
  • Boston Renaud, Rainbow District School Board, Heavy Equipment Service
  • Blake Rushton, Kaiden Filiatrault, Sudbury Catholic District School Board, Carpentry
  • Parker Tilbury, Sudbury Catholic District School Board, Carpentry

The 2023 results bring the all-time tally of Team Sudbury to a resounding 31 medals since 2018: 7 gold, 8 silver and 16 bronze.

"I am so impressed by the results from this year's Skills Ontario Competition," says Shawn Poland, Interim President of Cambrian College. "This is a competition that brings together hundreds of students for Canada's largest skilled trades and technologies competition and every year we emerge stronger and more successful. We're making a mark and Sudbury's skills are getting noticed across all of Ontario."

"This is a wonderful opportunity for students from Rainbow Schools to join their counterparts and shine on the provincial stage. This bodes well for the future as we continue to work together to address the need for skilled workers in the trades."

"These achievements are a testament to the hours of hard work and determination from our students and their mentors. Our students continue to prove that they are leaders and innovators within their chosen industries, and we are very proud of their efforts. We would like to acknowledge all our teacher mentors for passionately supporting our students as they explore and ultimately pursue careers in the skilled trades. We especially thank teachers Kirk McKee and Chris Kohut for mentoring and coaching our medal winners."
