NORQUEST COLLEGE
Park's opening offers road map for growth of NorQuest College

October 10, 2023

The official opening today (Sept 21) of NorQuest College's new campus park signalled a step towards a bold vision for the future where all learners can grow and flourish. As part of the park's opening in the heart of downtown Edmonton, dignitaries unveiled the park's Cree name Miyonohk, meaning "a good place," and celebrated the college's recently released Campus Master Plan.

"NorQuest's new park brings life to our campus space in downtown Edmonton," says Carolyn Campbell, President and CEO of NorQuest College.

"It is a space to gather, a door to our campus, and a symbol of how we will continue to positively impact our place and our community through present and future development in Edmonton's downtown education district. Most of all, today's celebration illustrates how we will transform Alberta through our province's most exciting and rewarding resources its people."

NorQuest is one of the fastest-growing post-secondary institutions in Alberta and the largest comprehensive community college in the province. This rapid growth is sustained and managed through the transformation projected in the Campus Master Plan.

A park created through resurgence, beauty, and joy

The opening of Miyonohk signals the continued integration of Indigenous culture and knowledge into all aspects of college life. With a name gifted to NorQuest by Indigenous elders and knowledge keepers, Miyonohk is a tangible illustration of Indigenization at the very heart of NorQuest's future.

"We have such gratitude for the generosity and connection to Indigenous communities across Treaty 6, the Métis Nation of Alberta, and to our elders and cultural advisors for entrusting NorQuest College with this name for our beautiful park," says Donna Bell, Manager of Indigenous Relations and Supports. "Miyonohk honours and deepens NorQuest's connection to the land and its original inhabitants and creates a space where Indigenous peoples can see themselves here in the college."

Learners, community, and industry stakeholders are invited to partner with the college through these and other remarkable opportunities coming to NorQuest and through NorQuest 2030: we are who we include.
