November 3, 2023

Northlands College is proud to announce the appointment of two esteemed Elders-in-Residence, Margaret Rose McIntyre and Ron Ratte, who will play a pivotal role in enriching the cultural fabric of our institution and fostering deeper connections with Indigenous communities.

Margaret Rose McIntyre, affectionately known as Abby, brings with her a wealth of knowledge and a profound connection to her roots. Raised along the Churchill River in the small northern settlement of Dipper Lake, she proudly hails from the English River First Nation (ERFN) at Patuanak, Saskatchewan. Her upbringing was steeped in the strong Denesuline' values, and she prides herself on being fluent in her language. Margaret Rose has developed enduring connections and relationships with the land and culture, firmly believing in the significance of preserving the Gift of Language bestowed upon us by the Creator.

Ron Ratte, a member of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, joins Northlands College with an impressive background. He formerly served as the Manager and Director of Indigenous Initiatives at the college, accumulating extensive experience and fostering relationships within the fields of Justice, Policing, and Mental Health. His dedication to the betterment of Indigenous communities and commitment to building bridges between institutions and these crucial sectors make him a welcome addition to our college.

Karsten Henriksen, President & CEO of Northlands College, highlighted the college's dedication to Indigenous initiatives, stating, "Northlands College is firmly rooted in its commitment to Indigenous initiatives. We believe that preserving and celebrating the culture and heritage of Indigenous peoples is not just an obligation but an honor. It's at the very core of our fundamental pillars, which include empowering and serving the North. We are proud to welcome both Margaret Rose McIntyre and Ron Ratte as our Elders-in-Residence as we continue to drive our initiatives towards Indigenization. Their invaluable contributions will serve as a beacon guiding our path forward."

Northlands College is excited to have Margaret Rose McIntyre and Ron Ratte on board and looks forward to the wisdom, guidance, and inspiration they will bring to our institution. Their presence will undoubtedly play an essential role in nurturing a more inclusive and culturally rich environment for our learners and the communities we serve.
