FANSHAWE COLLEGE
Fanshawe conducts emergency training exercise

May 3, 2024

On May 2, Fanshawe students and employees along with community first responders participated in a training exercise that simulated a mass casualty incident at the College's London Campus (1001 Fanshawe College Blvd.).

The event allows for an evaluation of the College's emergency response plan while providing a platform to evaluate Fanshawe's Advanced Care Paramedic students.

Advanced Care Paramedic students were dispatched to multiple scenes to treat patients, portrayed by volunteers and students in the Acting for Screen and Stage program as well as volunteers from outside the college. The exercise involved more than 200 students and staff from programs across the College, including Respiratory Therapy, Nursing, 911 and Public Safety Communications, Office Administration, as well as simulation and immersive technology labs.

Community partners also took part, including London Health Sciences Centre, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and Salvation Army. Emergency response teams from around the region sent teams to the exercise, including London Police Service, London Fire Department, Middlesex-London Paramedic Service, Norfolk County Paramedic Services and Oxford County Paramedic Services.

"We value our partnerships with community emergency responders and welcome opportunities to test our mutual emergency response plans on our campuses," says Brenda Henry, Fanshawe's Director of Environment Health, Safety and Emergency Services. "This collaborative approach not only reinforces our commitment to campus safety but also strengthens the broader community's readiness to respond effectively in times of crisis."
